Drill Baby Drill

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

This article is why we will, as a country, continue our slide into 2nd-World status. From the article:

Japan’s ongoing Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis has spawned some rapid-fire developments for future energy production.
...
Shimizu Corporation construction firm’s research branch, CSP, unveiled a long-term planning project to install a belt of photovoltaic panels across the surface of the Moon. Power gathered from the 13,000 terrawatts of continuous solar energy the Moon’s surface receives daily would be beamed back to an Earth-based receiving station via microwave or laser transmission, where it would then be used to power public offices, hospitals and schools across the globe.
...
To make the process more efficient, the proposed plan includes building the LUNA RING’s solar panels on the lunar surface using local materials, rather than launching pre-built panels to the site.
Energy crisis in Japan? "Hey, let's harness the sun's power on the moon, using a global-cooperative approach! We all benefit!"

Energy crisis in America? Drill, baby, drill.

Seriously, where is the kind of forward-thinking from our own energy companies? And notice, it's not the Japanese Government thinking of this project. It's a fucking business.

We are so fucked. Our Galtian Overlords can't even come up with their own awesome projects. Must be because they are too hampered by government interference to think of cool shit.

Mockery is the Best Defense

Monday, May 23, 2011

Here's another fine example of mockery being the best defense against the idiots.

In Tennessee, state lawmakers want to prohibit teachers from discussing homosexuality in the classroom. Somehow, if you don't talk about gay, then nobody will be gay.

As only he can, George Takei has a solution:
It's OK to be Takei.

Missing The Rapture

Saturday, May 21, 2011

Well, folks, at 6:00 pm on this Saturday, May 21, in the year of our Lord 2011, I was not Raptured. Nor were Mrs. Smitty's especially Jesusly Aunt and Uncle (who mind you, have spent an entire 24 hours praying over a cup).

I can only assume this to mean one of two things:

  1. Harold Camping is wrong and we truly cannot know God's divine will for ending creation

  2. It's not going happen any time, anywhere, save for 3.5 billion years from now when our sun runs out of hydrogen, loses it's equilibrium, swells to a red giant, and consumes the Earth

Either way, Harold Camping is wrong. Hide your surprise.

Wait...Monk In Training...are...are you still with us?

I might have to reserve, erm, judgment until we know if Monk is still here. If anyone is going to be reputed out of our stock of lunatics who are a part of is blog, it's him.

By the way, my pint of choice for awaiting the rapture was a bottle of Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout. I could think of no better way to celebrate the end of the world or a simply beautiful Saturday afternoon than with that beer.

Made in the USA

Thursday, May 19, 2011

I really did not think Obama or his campaign would have the balls to do it, but they are actually “selling” t-shirts making a funny out of the whole birth certificate nonsense.

Openly mocking Trump and the rest of the birther/truther/tenther fanatics is the best way to handle them. The next thing is to openly ridicule all those who made up the death panel and other health care reform lies.

Donate $25 to get your t-shirt here.

After the Rapture Pet Care...Repent! The end is nigh!

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

After the Rapture Pet Care, a business in Lansing, has created a valuable service for Christians expecting to be raptured this weekend. For the low, low price of $10, a non-believer will collect a pet and care for them after it's owner has moved on to be with Jesus.

I am not sure how all the Jews, Muslims and Atheists will collect pets while simultaneously trying to extinguish the flames of hell, but if you are interested you might find the answer at their website. They also have some great merchandise. The doggie t-shirt is a nice item and is Made in the USA, which might be important to you if you think our economy might survive the end-of-days.

UPDATE: A second service has been located.

Craft Beer Week

Monday, May 16, 2011

Welcome, friends, to American Craft Beer Week!

From the Brewers' Assocation:

For the first time in its six year history, American Craft Beer Week will see official events hosted in all 50 states, making it the largest-ever celebration of U.S. craft brewers. From May 16-22, new beer lovers and seasoned enthusiasts will raise glasses of their favorite IPA, amber, stout—or anything in-between—to honor the more than 1,700 small and independent craft brewers responsible for the vibrant American craft beer scene.
For a list of events in Michigan, go here and select Michigan.

At the very least, in your own way, you can find a local watering hole that sells Michigan-made beer (or for our other blog friends in other states, whatever your local beer is!). Choose that beer over the standard stuff...and celebrate the work our own local beer artists create from the earth!

Happy Craft Beer Week!

Monday, May 09, 2011

I would never, ever intentionally read "The Blaze. On its own "About" page, it says right away: "The Blaze is a news, information and opinion site brought to you by Glenn Beck and a dedicated team of writers, journalists & video producers."

So, yeah, that's enough to get me to not read it.

However, my iPad App called Zite, which assembles a web-based daily magazine for me, linked to this gem: FORGET WATER: DRINKING BEER POST-WORKOUT IS BETTER FOR YOU, SCIENTISTS SAY. From the article:

In a rare piece of good news for those who like a pint, Spanish researchers say beer can help someone who is dehydrated retain liquid better than water.

...

Prof Garzon asked a group of students to do strenuous exercise in temperatures of around 40ºC (104ºF). Half were given a pint of beer, while the others received the same volume of water.
Prof Garzon, who announced the results at a press conference in Granada beneath a banner declaring “Beer, Sport, Health”, said the hydration effect in those who drank beer was “slightly better”.

Juan Antonio Corbalan, a cardiologist who worked formerly with Real Madrid football players and Spain’s national basketball team, said beer had the perfect profile for re-hydration after sport.

I personally plan to drink beer while I exercise. Every morning in the gym, I join rows of people on treadmills who look positively dismal as they lumber along, swigging purified water from their squeeze bottles. But not me. I'll be smiling away, drinking, say, a British Brown Ale or perhaps and IPA.

Something More To Ponder

Wednesday, May 04, 2011

From a WaPo op-ed author, The Spirited Atheist, a personal favorite addition to the WaPo's "On Faith" feature, her piece on the death of Osama bin Laden:

bin Laden's death and the madness of crowds.

I really like how she bookends her post:

I suppose that someone, somewhere in the United States finds it ethically repugnant that our government hunted down and killed Osama bin Laden. I am not that someone. It is just and necessary that this evil man was finally punished for the mass murders he engineered on September 11, 2001. But I am repelled by the scenes of mindless jubilation, from Times Square to the park in front of the White House, that erupted after President Obama delivered the news in a properly sober tone Sunday night.

...

If there is a moral here, it is emphatically not the childish mantra that “bad guys do get caught.” It is that unearned happiness is a fleeting, unreliable commodity that has nothing to do with reason, justice, or what it takes to build a decent society and a decent world.
It's a short post, but well-worth the quick read.

Something to Ponder

Tuesday, May 03, 2011

While I am greatly relieved that Bin Laden is gone and I think the world is a better place without him, I will admit that I don't feel the same sense of giddiness and excitement that some have. A few of my friends have been posting this passage from Proverbs (24:17) and seen to be getting some flak.

Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles;

I think there is something to be said about giving credit where credit is due, then moving on and hopefully making wise decisions.
