WTF is a Hutaree??

Monday, March 29, 2010

I can't find much more on the interwebs about this, but it looks like the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms raided a Christian Militia camp here in Adrian, Michigan.

From the article:

A Christian militia group was a target of at least one of a series of weekend raids the FBI conducted in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, a Michigan militia leader says.
The FBI said Sunday that it had conducted raids in the three states, resulting in at least three arrests. Federal warrants were sealed, but a federal law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity said some of those arrested face gun charges and officials are pursuing other suspects. Some of the suspects were expected in court Monday.

This group is called Hutaree. I looked everywhere on Teh Google, and the only thing I could find regarding just what a Hutaree is I found on their website. It is apparently a Christian warrior.

On its website, Hutaree quotes several Bible passages and states: "We believe that one day, as prophecy says, there will be an Anti-Christ. ... Jesus wanted us to be ready to defend ourselves using the sword and stay alive using equipment."

Find their website here. Big fun.

Maybe more links later if more develops about why the feds raided this enclave.

***UPDATE***

Thanks to an astute reader at another site I frequent, here's more to the story.

It turns out that these Hutaree members wished to kill cops. In fact, they went as far as to create a plan to:
--kill a cop by luring them in with a fake 9-1-1 call
--sneak to the funeral
--blow up home-made bombs at the funeral to kill even more cops.

Why?
After such attacks, the group allegedly planned to retreat to "rally points" protected by trip-wired improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, for what they expected would become a violent standoff with law enforcement personnel.

[...]

According to investigators, the Hutaree view local, state, and federal law enforcement personnel as a "brotherhood" and an enemy, and planned to attack them as part of an armed struggle against the U.S. government.

Sigh...

One more link chock-full of info, including what the fundamentalist extremists were just indicted with in Detroit today.

Hutaree was founded to fight the anti-Christ? Hmmm. Who could that be?

There are other reports that the Michigan Militia was working with the government and asked these Hutaree fellows to turn themselves in. You must really be a freak when the nuts at the Michigan Militia say you should hang it up. Maybe the Michigan Militia didn’t want to be associated once again with an Oklahoma City style bombing.

Sad, true and hilarious.

I just can't wrap my head around this! And what a story for Holy Week, when Jesus showed all the world that the answer to violence is NOT more violence!

Just this weekend, a meditation from my Order discussed the idea that one of our core principles is the idea that we "sacrifice of ourselves in service of others". In my and our view, that seems to be a central tenet of the Gospel.

This militia will never defeat any supposed Anti-Christ by taking up arms, but if they want to defeat evil, then they only have to die to their own wickedness and live in the freedom to serve that Jesus brought to us in the Gospel.

Sorry about the sermon, but I just had to, and letting a Friar post..well that will happen from time to time! ;)

Sorry about the sermon

We always appreciate your point of view, Brother!

When militias start shooting cops, they will declare war on law enforcement. I will bet on the cops coming out ahead and the militia coming out dead.

I saw several posts on some other forums by MM members that wanted to be as far distanced from this group as they possibly could and were quick to point out that they had nothing to do with this group (as they had nothing to do with OKC). They sound like a nuttier version of the Jonestown crew.

Supposedly, they approached the MM a few years ago looking for help and hoping they could coordinate efforts, which is somewhat ironic, considering the MM person they talked to was a Muslim. The MM contacted the FBI and the State Police and they have been building a case against these guys for some time.

My opinion of the MM, while still pretty low, has now increased several notches. A Muslim in the ranks? AND they worked *with* the government? Huh. Maybe not totally nucking futs after all...

I still think they are kind of weird, but I have met a few that are in leadership positions and they seem pretty normal. Most of the rhetoric I hear seems to be focused on preparing for natural disasters and other emergencies, as opposed to hating the government.

The Hutaree had contacted the Lenawee County branch of the MM, who are headed by a Muslim, and asked for help in planning a future raid against Muslims living in MI. They don't seem all that bright. Saw what you want about the MM, but they don't seem to want to be associated with religious nuts.

I am not interested in joining the MM, but they seem harmless.

I am so used to the usual stories involving interviews from the militia who are massively racist lunatics bent on government black helicopter conspiracies.

But looking at them deeper, especially the ones who don't act all covert and sneaky, you find what amounts to ex-military, hunters and gun enthusiasts looking for a hobby. Pretty normal dudes who I bet would indeed come to help if there was a disaster.

But alas...being who they are means they have to lie in bed with the lunatics.

It is like the environmental movement. Most in that are decent people that just want clean air and clean water and to lessen pollution. Then there are the people that set fire to college labs.
