Twinkies R.I.P.

Monday, November 19, 2012

Hostess has filed for bankruptcy, so it looks like the end of Twinkies, for the time being. There are all sorts of suggestions as to why this is happening, from changing eating habits, to a greedy union. Looking at the epidemic of obesity and how much processed foods people eat, it is hard for me to believe that people don't want this kind of food. I am not a huge fan of Twinkies, though I am saddened that 18,000 people have lost their jobs. One story that isn't getting a lot of press is how much money the higher ups at Hostess were making. From another article:
BCTGM members are well aware that as the company was preparing to file for bankruptcy earlier this year, the then CEO of Hostess was awarded a 300 percent raise (from approximately $750,000 to $2,550,000) and at least nine other top executives of the company received massive pay raises. One such executive received a pay increase from $500,000 to $900,000 and another received one taking his salary from $375,000 to $656,256.
Yep, must have been greedy unions. I am not a business expert, but it looks like a lot of upper level mismanagement. It also looks like they knew things were getting bad and figured to get as much as they could before the company went belly up.

Results of a Obama Vs. Gingrich general election?

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

I am just throwing this out there.  It is not real sciencey.

I looked at the 2008 states that were close, but went for McCain, plus added in S. Carolina, where recent polling shows a possible upset.  Yes, it is early, but I love maps and its just fun to speculate.

Electoral College Results:
Obama: 381
Gingrich: 157

Goodbye Y-Chromosome. Hello Minivan.

Thursday, March 10, 2011

Way back in November of 2007, Smitty announced not only his incoming twins, but the impending purchase of a …gasp...minivan.

I reflected back on this post to see what crap I wrote about minivans and to see how much shit I gave Smitty about buying the darn thing. At the time, I said:

“You have to hand it to a guy who has enough confidence in his manhood to drive a minivan.

I just couldn't handle a mini being my daily driver. I am sure they ride and handle much better today, but the last one I drove made my pick-up feel sporty.

Oh, I will have to eat my words one day as a growing family will make the usefulness of the minivan unavoidable...dammit.”
Eat my words indeed. Tonight I pick up the glorious minivan.

The funny part is, I had talked my wife out of the minivan and into a three-row SUV…er crossover thingy. Then I priced them out. When a decent van is 6 to 7 grand less than a stripper Chevy crossover, the minivan gets pretty attractive.

I would never put this thing in the sporty category, but the new engine an transmission combo they just added can about tear the tires off the rims.  The engine has 283 HP for gods sake.  My old Mustang with a built 289 c.i. V-8 had about 240 HP.

It ain't cool, but its the most practical vehicle for hauling around a bunch of people and stuff and the price was decent.

God Hates Figs!

Monday, November 15, 2010

We here in Lansing, Michigan are so fortunate that we will soon be visited by the loony bin commonly known as The Westboro Baptist Church! On November 18, they plan to visit East Lansing High School. From their lovely, completely rational website God Hates Fags:

East Lansing High School in East Lansing, MI November 18, 2010 2:50 PM - 3:20 PM
WBC to picket the worthless brats who attend East Lansing High School, as well as their teachers and parents who have taught them from the cradle that God is a liar. You reprobates will hear some truth for the first time in your lives, to wit: God does NOT love everyone and it IS NOT okay to be gay or to fornicate with anyone or thing you please. Instead, you are to flee youthful lusts that war against your soul and seek to live sober, righteous and godly while on this earth. Now that you are old enough to read for yourselves, check this out:

Abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul (1 Pet. 2:11); Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart (2 Tim. 2:22).

Your parents, teachers, preachers and leaders - including Anti-Christ Beast Obama - lied to you because they hate you and they hope to justify their own sins by refusing to teach you what God requires of you. Well, WBC will teach you; here it is from King Solomon, the wisest man who EVER lived:

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. (Ec. 12:13.)

How blessedly simple. Now, just DO IT -- TODAY! This nation's destruction is imminent!!
I see that the Westboro goons also protested yet another soldier's funeral in McAlester, OK. From the article in Tulsa World:
Members of a Kansas church who protest at military funerals may have found themselves in the wrong town Saturday.

Shortly after finishing their protest at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey of McAlester, a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to their minivan, only to discover that its front and rear passenger-side tires had been slashed.

To make matters worse, as their minivan slowly hobbled away on two flat tires, with a McAlester police car following behind, the protesters were unable to find anyone in town who would repair their vehicle, according to police.
click on the photo...it's large enough to read the text...classic!
I personally haven't decided if I will go to East Lansing High and counter-protest. I'm caught in that weird zone where one part of me really wants to send them a message and join a rally against their stupidity and the pther part of me wants to turn the other cheek, ignore them, and hope that some day they go away because everyone ignores them.

**UPDATE**

From the Facebook Status of a friend of mine: A coalition of community organizations, clergy, and concerned citizens will be holding a counter-protest to the WBC this Thursday from 2pm-4pm in the parking lot of the All Saints Church. Please don't give these hateful outsiders what they want by confroting them at ELHS. Instead either ignore them entirely or join us at All Saints to send a message that East Lansing is a community that celebrates diversity and welcomes all who would make our city their home.

Health Care for All = the Fall of a Nation?

Friday, August 07, 2009

An article by Andrew Sullivan of the Atlantic puts the debate about the health care plans into perspective.

“The passions out there are somewhat mystifying to me. Here is what we are debating: should we demand that insurance companies provide policies to anyone regardless of pre-existing conditions? Should we help the working poor buy that insurance with subsidies? Are competitive exchanges for health insurance a good or bad thing? Would a public option or a co-op help bring down healthcare costs? Does it make sense for the government to study the effectiveness of various treatments as a guide for doctors? These are all worth debating - and if you break it down into these questions, a majority would back them. Obama's proposals were very, very well illuminated in the campaign…”
If the media would discuss it in these terms, wouldn’t most Americans question the sanity or motives of those who are vehemently opposed? Screaming "nazi" and "fascism" when debating health care for kids seems a little out of the mainstream don't you think?

Real the entire article here.

Discuss.

I am NOT Going to Talk About Michael Jackson

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

While a gazillion people wax poetic about how, in some alternate universe, Michael Jackson single-handedly broke down race barriers for entertainers, musicians, sports figures and children, there's some other pretty big shit going-down today:

President Obama visited Russia today. Nobody is apparently going to bomb anybody, and in fact, there will be further nucLEAR disarmament.

While meeting with some guarded success, American and Coalition troops are dying.

1,400 Chinese protestors were arrested this morning, with some Muslim Chinese expressing frustration over being treated as "second-class citizens." The Chinese government "took all the usual steps to enshrine its version of events as received wisdom: it crippled Internet service; blocked Twitter’s micro-blogs; purged search engines of unapproved references to the violence; saturated the Chinese media with the state-sanctioned story."

Mahmoud Ahmadalphabet says that the Iranian elections "were clean, fair and were the start of a new era." Please try to stifle laughter. The opposition is demanding the release of people taken into custody during the protests.

Siciliano's Market, a beer and homebrewing store in Grand Rapids, MI, made a big-time national blog today! I know ATK contributor Sopor is a big Siciliano's patron...

Just, you know, for some perspective that despite certain national days of mourning, Marines and soldiers are getting blown up, Obama is trying to make sure Putin doesn't slip a knife between his shoulder blades, 1,400 people are arrested and a State censors its own populations from the facts, a half-crazed dictator declares himself the winner of an election after beating and arresting anyone who said he wasn't, and a local beer supply shop makes big news!

Free-market Fundamentalism Revisited

Friday, April 03, 2009

Via Balloon Juice, I just discovered the American News Project (ANP), which seems to be an interesting source of video journalism outside the mainstream media. The résumés of those running ANP demonstrate a high level of experience and qualification.

In the video essay below, ANP took a look at the financial crisis. The story, produced last September, discusses many of the things we have been discussing here at ATK: Deregualtion of the financial sector, trade, economics and "free-market fundamentalism". The interesting thing, is that they don’t just seek answers to the why and how of the crisis and how to fix it, but they discuss how very few people, even the brightest minds, don’t know how to fix it.

It is pretty hard to have an honest understanding about whether or not the Obama administration is doing the right things to fix this crisis, when these types don’t have a clue. I think all a leader can do in this crisis like this is take a shot at fixing the economy based on their judgment, but in the end, it’s a stab in the dark.

It’s fine if someone chooses to criticize the administration’s economic policies, but if one does so while acting as if they know better, they are likely lying. In the end, those who criticize this approach probably have no clue how to fix it either, no matter what their credentials. In other words, we might be screwed.

EDIT:

In a second essay, ANP takes a good look at the possible rise of a populist movement with some historical perspective.

Cars that run on beer, bitches.

The jokes about tipsy conventioneers aside, it's a sobering fact that flex-fuel vehicles are in America's future. So it's no joke that the Democratic National Convention, General Motors and the Molson Coors Brewing Co. have joined forces to ensure that convention VIPs will ride in GM vehicles fueled with ethanol that comes, in part, from beer.
Yes. The party that gives you Barak Obama also gives you cars that run on beer. Mr. Obama...can we have cars that run on beer?

Yes. We. Can.

Now, I will say that I am dismayed that there is enough "waste beer" every year to produce 3 million gallons of fuel to run in GM's flex fuel vehicles. Get on the ball, people. But at the very least, if wine snobs and liquor-only drinkers won't chip in and help us consume every drop of beer every year, I guess this is the next best alternative than just dumping it down the drain.

I am a little concerned about what these cars'...ahem...exhaust will smell like.

The Impact of “Obamacons”

Monday, June 09, 2008

I have personally heard from a half-dozen strong Republican voters who are planning on voting for Obama in November. They include my in-laws, a couple Lansing area Republican lobbyists and others. There is even a name for it now: “Obamacons”, or conservative Obama supporters.

Who are these people? Why are they supporting a lefty, like Obama? Are they a large enough group to impact the election?

Last week, in an article by E.J Dionne Jr. of the Washington Post discussed this issue in relation to Douglas Kmiec, a pro-life activist and former employee of the Justice Department under the Reagan administration, who is an Obama supporter. The article, which was written in response to Kmiec being denied communion because of his Obama support, said that Kmiec was supporting Obama: “…despite the candidate's position on abortion, not because of it, partly in the hope that Obama's emphasis on personal responsibility in sexual matters might change the nature of the nation's argument on life issues.” In the article, Kmiec also stated that conservatives find Obama's call for a new approach to politics appealing.

Is this a trend or just merely a few disenfranchised conservatives? Has Bush’s failures pushed conservatives to Obama, or are there things about Obama that draw conservatives to him?

What do you think?

Could the Primary Really Be Over?

Tuesday, June 03, 2008

When the country started the primary races, I began as an Edwards supporter, who could have supported either Obama or Clinton had either won the nomination. As time went on, and Edwards left the race, it was clear to me that the race for the nomination was also a race for the Democratic Party’s soul. Would we turn back to the Republican-lite policies of the first Clinton administration or roll the dice on a fresh new face who promised reform?

I definitely turned away from Hillary Clinton because of how she ran her race; as she essentially became the desperate-for-power caricature that her detractors had always drawn. Fortunately, it looks like we will have a candidate soon, and despite being an inexperienced campaigner and young, he is a candidate that ran an overall respectful primary battle, is a person we can respect, and is a person inspiring millions of people.

As the super delegates start to fall toward Obama, what are your thoughts about the general election race? Will Clinton cave in tonight or just “suspend” her campaign Romney style?

BTW – For the 1.6 Million ATK readers in the Lansing area who want to go to a little pro-Obama party, some supporters and Obama staff will be meeting at the Nuthouse in Lansing on Michigan Avenue at 8 pm.

Beer Industry News

Saturday, May 10, 2008

The Beer Industry has obviously been changing a lot in the last decade, well actually the last couple of decades (I just wasn't old enough to enough to experience the first craft beer boom).

Obviously the Craft Beer segment has been enjoying rather lucrative and remarkable success of late. However, signs are starting to show that the growth of that success may be slowing. Specifically, craft beer sales in Supermarkets (a decent indicator of mass market beer purchasing trends) appears to be slower this year than last (disclosure: that blog is "supported" by Miller). Is the "non-beergeek" market reaching saturation? Or is this simply a sign of the declining economy? Personally, I think it's an economic indicator. There's not much indication that American hunger and thirst for higher quality foods and goods is waining, simply that we don't have the fricken cash to buy the good stuff as often! Combine this with increased prices due to rising fuel, hop, and barley prices, and you've got the all the ingredients for Market Stagnation Sour Ale all sitting in a pot, ready to brew!

It seems to me that perhaps some of the Big Boys on the block are on the same page. The big 3 (Anheuser, Miller, and Coors, just to be sure...) have been dabbling in the craft market for some time, with varying degrees of success.

Coors has had good success with Blue Moon, including double digit growth last year.

Miller is trying... something with Miller Chill, and apparently making money on it... but has always had Leinenkugel in the craft segment as well, not to mention being a part of SABMiller which makes lots of brands like... Well lots of stuff most of us probably haven't heard of...

Anheuser-Busch has never seemed to have as strong a presence in the craft segment. They've had some true craft brews, but no big movers. Their Green Valley Brewing Company Organics brews are pretty decent, if you're into the whole organic thing (I prefer local, but that's a different post...), but AB has had troubles with flagship Budweiser, whose sales have been steadily declining. Michelob has some decent craft brews, but they're not very widely recognized, as most people think Michelob makes only , ahem, Michelob (Lager) and Light and Ultra, and Amber Bock and Ultra. AB responded in different ways to the craft beer "phenomenon" in the past, leveraging it's exclusive distribution chain by obtaining the rights to distribute Inbev beer in America, which includes lots of good stuff like Bass, Beck's, Franziskaner (a personal fav!) and more. I think, a smart move on AB's part, really shows that they know how to utilize their resources to some degree rather than always resort the crass humor and sex to sell product.

It seems AB has decided that approaching this market directly is a good idea. They're going to let Michelob go more their own way, and send them off with the encouraging advice "Now remember Son, that craft beer market is new and it's growing, and it's all for you! Go get 'em tiger!" Here's what Andy Crouch of Beer Advocate Magazine had to say about that in the May 2008 issue(I couldn't find this online, so here it is verbatim):

"Michelob Wins Independence"

Anheuser-Busch is stepping up efforts to match the shifting American beer Palate and address the success of craft brewers. The saint Louis based brewer, recently announced plans to spin off its 112 year old Michelob family of brand into an autonomous division. The new unit, to be called the Michelob Brewing Co., will promote its existing brands including Michelob AmberBock and Porter, as well as the breweries line of seasonal ales and lagers including Beach Bum Blonde. The Michelob Brewing Company will also focus on producing a diverse range of more flavorful beers in the craft style. The first release will be the Michelob Dunkel Weisse a take off on a similar style beer called a cent 54 brewed exclusively for the Colorado markets. The brewery has registered label applications for several additional brands including a Brown Ale, Red Ale and a Bohemian Pilsener. Michelob Pale Ale will also be expanding into a year-round offering.

(Props to Jott.com for it's sweet cellphone driven free transcription service, which even did a respectable job with Dunkel Weisse even though it was expecting me to speak English!)

I for one, and excited about this Dunkel Weisse. Ascent 54, the beer on which Michelob Dunkel Weisse is said to be based, scores well on BeerAdvocate.com, and I'm a big fan of the style! Also, Brown ales. If they do a decent job of distributing the Michelob brands, this could mean decent brews available in a lot more locations. Like how about a rotating Michelob tab in a bar with 3 or 4 taps? Or the local store in a community of 2-3000 carrying 3 Michelob brands, Lager, D-Weisse and Red or something. Cool enough for me! This will hopefully prevent us from having to go as far out of our way to get something decent to drink.

To be honest, I think that craft brewers need to embrace the fact that Extreme beer is not going to be able to carry a business. It seems that a lot of breweries rely on the success of one or two extreme beers, and the market conditions dictate that this is not a sustainable model right now. I think breweries need to embrace the traditions of brewing and look into less expensive but just as good alternatives to extremes such as Altbiers and Milds and Bitters. Or how about Berliner Weisse? There's a good "extreme" style (brewer w/Lactobacillus) that should be relatively inexpensive to make due to it's low malt bill, it only ends 4.5% or so, so it doesn't need much grain. This is the kind of thinking that a brewery needs get new beer drinkers and continue to grow in today's beer market (IMO). The craft brewers can't continue to market so directly to the "beergeek" market, as that is too small of a market for them to be successful in the long run.

Budweiser is also releasing a new Ale, Budweiser American Ale. Supposed to be amber colored and use Cascade hops, I'll give it a shot!

Remember the exclusive distribution deal AB has with it's Distros? AB is loosening the hold, according to Andy Crouch. AB is going to allow distributors to carry non-AB craft brands, but only in markets where there is not a competing AB/Mich brew or Inbev import. That's still pretty limiting IMHO... but as I was saying earlier, AB's exclusivity with their distros has worked to their advantage!

Mergers are one way some breweries have been dealing with all of the recent market and price crunches. Of course in 2005 there was the Molson Coors merger, and some of you may not have heard of the Redhook/Widmer merger announced in 2007. This year though, it's Pyramid, the fourth brewery to go public the same year as Redhook, Pete's, and Boston (Sam Adams), is being bought by privately held Magic Hat out of Vermont. Interestingly, R. Martin Kelly, current CEO of Magic Hat, used to be the CEO of Pyramid.

Speaking of Boston Brewing Company, I'd like to commend them on the dealings with Freetown, Massachusetts. BBC has worked with Freetown for over a year on a deal to establish a new Samuel Adams Brewery there, and has instead decided to buy the Lehigh Valley Brewery in Pennsylvania. BBC has pledged $50,000 to the city of Freetown "to purchase an item or items for the town that [they] would not normally be able to afford." Cool! They're obviously not hurting for cash either...

All-in-all, I think the brewing industry is learning how to deal with the current market constraints, and the big boys (read:AB) are taking notice of the craft market for real. The brewing industry will be fine, the economy is the biggest deterring factor. Drink beer! Drink local! (when you can...)

Year-End Housecleaning: Dickheads of the Year

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

As 2007 comes to a close, thank God, we need to do a little housecleaning. Just some minor tasks to get some stuff off our collective chests and get ready for 2008.

Usually, this is handled by a VH-1 special about Best Year Ever and other such "Best Of" shows, or Comedy Central's year-end roast of some sort. But compliments of Mrs. Smitty, I have stumbled across Dickheads of the Year by Bill Maher. They are listed in no particular order (though one could make the argument that it is ordered from "plain old dickhead" to "massive universe-collapsing dickhead"), as it starts with Michael Vick, who, while a total loser dickhead, does not reach the mighty dickheadity of the other dickheads on this list.

Take a gander. Add your own ideas and submissions to the comments section.

It's Corny that Beer Prices Ale Me

Monday, November 12, 2007

My father in law, who lives in Myrtle Beach, sent me this alarming article about beer consistency, quality and prices.

Looks like bad weather has damaged the hops output in America and Germany. I blame global warming. If ever there was one issue that would finally get me off the stick to do something about globa, warming, it's that is threatens my ability to use what hops I want to use, and will increase the price of my favorite beers, and homebrewing. Damn you, global warming. From the article:

Australia endured its worst drought on record. Hail storms across Europe damaged crops. Extreme heat in the western United States hurt both yields and quality.
And then, to make matters worse, I find out that the fucking solution to global warming is increaing the prices of wheat and barley because farmers are switching to growing corn to meet ethanol demands!
Barley and wheat prices have skyrocketed as more farmers plant corn to meet increasing demand for ethanol, while others plant feed crops to replace acres lost to corn.
How, now, am I supposed to b environmentally-conscious when the much-celebrated ethanol-burning vehicles of the future are actually responsible for driving-up the price of my favorite beers?

The answer, fellow beer lovers, is Cellulosic Ethanol:
While chemically identical to ethanol produced from corn or soybeans, cellulose ethanol exhibits a net energy content three times higher than corn ethanol and emits a low net level of greenhouse gases.
Get off of corn ethanol, folks. It's going to drive up food - and beer - prices. Get on the cellulosic bandwagon.

This is a classic example of being careful of what you wish for. Global warming, all jokes aside, is a huge issue; climate change in general is going to be a key factor in how and where we farm. But sometimes the easiest solution, which in this case is making fuel of something using a process we and our ancestors have used for millenium - distilling, is economically the wrong solution. We're in a huge hurry to invest in corn ethanol when we should be investing in ethanol period, derived from plant matter. It's more flexible and adds value to all crops across the board.

And it won't increase the price of my beer!

Just Shy of 8 Is Enough

Monday, November 05, 2007

So I'll keep it short.

Here's a picture of the new Smitty Family purchase.

Yes, it's a Chevy Uplander. A minivan. Oh ye Gods, a minivan. But we love it.

Why, you ask, through gnashed teeth, whilst shaking your fists at the sky. Why on earth would such an awesome family like the Smitty family enjoy the purchase of a minivan?

Because Mrs. Smitty and I are thrilled to announce that this coming May, we will be expecting TWINS!

As for now, we are calling them Thing 1 and Thing 2. We won't know the gender until January-ish, and while the doctor sees signs of their being identical twins, we won't know for sure without a blood test after they're born.

Smitty Jr. is looking forward to 2 new hockey enthusiasts joining household. Mrs. Smitty and I are thrilled for more indentured servitude 12 more years down the road.

Schadenfreude

Monday, October 15, 2007

You ever seen someone berate someone else with such exacting language that you can't help but feel rotten....and you're not even the one being yelled at?

Enter Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez (U.S. Army - Retired). Last Friday, at the Military Reporters and Editors luncheon briefing, General Sanchez took the press corps to task first, then Congress and the President. He doled-out shame like candy at Halloween.

For a transcript, look here.

And he is right, in my estimation. He is right to berate the press folks for dishonesty and self-aggrandizement. And he is equally right to dismantle Congress and the Preznit for...well...exactly the same thing.

Some gems:

LET ME REVIEW SOME OF THE DESCRIPTIVE PHRASES THAT HAVE BEEN USED BY SOME OF YOU THAT HAVE MADE MY PERSONAL INTERFACES WITH THE PRESS CORPS DIFFICULT:

"DICTATORIAL AND SOMEWHAT DENSE",

"NOT A STRATEGIC THOUGHT",

LIAR,

"DOES NOT GET IT" AND

THE MOST INEXPERIENCED LTG.

IN SOME CASES I HAVE NEVER EVEN MET YOU, YET YOU FEEL QUALIFIED TO MAKE CHARACTER JUDGMENTS THAT ARE COMMUNICATED TO THE WORLD
Okay. So far, so good. Call them out for their personal attacks. But it gets cooler.
THIS IS THE WORST DISPLAY OF JOURNALISM IMAGINABLE BY THOSE OF US THAT ARE BOUND BY A STRICT VALUE SYSTEM OF SELFLESS SERVICE, HONOR AND INTEGRITY. ALMOST INVARIABLY, MY PERCEPTION IS THAT THE SENSATIONALISTIC VALUE OF THESE ASSESSMENTS IS WHAT PROVIDED THE EDGE THAT YOU SEEK FOR SELF AGRANDIZEMENT OR TO ADVANCE YOUR INDIVIDUAL QUEST FOR GETTING ON THE FRONT PAGE WITH YOUR STORIES! AS I UNDERSTAND IT, YOUR MEASURE OF WORTH IS HOW MANY FRONT PAGE STORIES YOU HAVE WRITTEN AND UNFORTUNATELY SOME OF YOU WILL COMPROMISE YOUR INTEGRITY AND DISPLAY QUESTIONABLE ETHICS AS YOU SEEK TO KEEP AMERICA INFORMED.
Heh. Take that....everyone.
ALL ARE VICTIMS OF THE MASSIVE AGENDA DRIVEN COMPETITION FOR ECONOMIC OR POLITICAL SUPREMACY. THE DEATH KNELL OF YOUR ETHICS HAS BEEN ENABLED BY YOUR PARENT ORGANIZATIONS WHO HAVE CHOSEN TO ALIGN THEMSELVES WITH POLITICAL AGENDAS. WHAT IS CLEAR TO ME IS THAT YOU ARE PERPETUATING THE CORROSIVE PARTISAN POLITICS THAT IS DESTROYING OUR COUNTRY AND KILLING OUR SERVICEMEMBERS WHO ARE AT WAR.
That says it all.

Here's some gems of his assessment of Iraq:
AFTER MORE THAN FOUR YEARS OF FIGHTING, AMERICA CONTINUES ITS DESPERATE STRUGGLE IN IRAQ WITHOUT ANY CONCERTED EFFORT TO DEVISE A STRATEGY THAT WILL ACHIEVE "VICTORY" IN THAT WAR TORN COUNTRY OR IN THE GREATER CONFLICT AGAINST EXTREMISM. FROM A CATASTROPHICALLY FLAWED, UNREALISTICALLY OPTIMISTIC WAR PLAN TO THE ADMINISTRATION'S LATEST "SURGE" STRATEGY, THIS ADMINISTRATION HAS FAILED TO EMPLOY AND SYNCHRONIZE ITS POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND MILITARY POWER. THE LATEST "REVISED STRATEGY" IS A DESPERATE ATTEMPT BY AN ADMINISTRATION THAT HAS NOT ACCEPTED THE POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC REALITIES OF THIS WAR AND THEY HAVE DEFINITELY NOT COMMUNICATED THAT REALITY TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. AN EVEN WORSE AND MORE DISTURBING ASSESSMENT IS THAT AMERICA CAN NOT ACHIEVE THE POLITICAL CONSENSUS NECESSARY TO DEVISE A GRAND STRATEGY THAT WILL SYNCHRONIZE AND COMMIT OUR NATIONAL POWER TO ACHIEVE VICTORY IN IRAQ.
The rest is an elaboration on exactly that point. But be assured, his angst is directed at who was in charge when we invaded...and the Congress that is in charge now. And the Preznit.

There are some keys in his discussion, including disdain for the "coalition" that's been put together. It was hasty, as he put it, and is under-resourced, especially as the coalition members withdraw. And they withdraw, in his estimation, because we have no plan other than individual political gain.

Go read it in its entireity.

Then let's discuss.
